A note about the project · Ankit Ruparel
Why Watch Something Great exists
You have an evening free. You want something great to watch. Choosing it should be the easy part.
Watch Something Great is a collection of films and TV series worth making time for. It gives you one recommendation at a time, with a short explanation of why someone thinks it belongs here. You can open its case, read about it, and move on to another.
The idea is simple: a good recommendation carries some care. Someone has noticed something in a film—a performance, a way of seeing the world, a scene that stays with them—and wants another person to experience it.
A reason to watch
A title and a score can tell you very little about what an evening with a film might feel like. I want each recommendation here to offer a reason. What makes this worth watching? What might someone find in it that they would otherwise miss?
The collection makes room for films and series across languages, places and decades. A familiar favourite can sit beside something you have never heard of. The homepage offers a little surprise; the catalogue lets you browse every current recommendation at your own pace.
Built with people who care
I want thoughtful people to contribute to this project. You do not need to be a critic or have watched everything. You might know one filmmaker deeply, follow a particular language’s cinema, or simply have one recommendation you keep making to your friends.
That attention is useful here. Tell us what you would add and why. Be specific. A few honest sentences about what moved you, surprised you or made you pay attention are more helpful than calling something a masterpiece.
How to take part
You can discover and read about titles without an account. Sign in if you want to save recommendations, rate what you have watched, and take part in curation.
Exploring ten titles opens a place for your first pick. Rating five opens another. Proposed titles go through review before joining the public recommendations. This gives people time to understand the collection before helping it grow.
The project is still growing. I want it to become a place where a good recommendation travels from one person who cares to another.
If that sounds like your kind of place, start with one film or series. When you have something to add, bring your recommendation.
